The purpose of the Cure Thirst Half-Marathon & 5K Walk is to raise awareness and financial support for the construction and repair of clean water wells in African villages that do not otherwise have access to safe water. In many areas women walk over two hours from their homes each day just to fetch water – water that is polluted with animal feces and contaminated with cholera, guinea worm, and diarrhoeal diseases, among others. Because clean water is simply not available, they and their families are forced to drink water that will inevitably lead to a variety of often fatal health conditions. Unsafe water kills more than 25,000 people each day and is responsible for 80% of all sickness in the world.
